How the corpus is calculated
- Your current expenses are inflated to your retirement age.
- The corpus must pay those expenses, rising with inflation every year, until your life expectancy. It keeps earning the post-retirement return, so the calculator uses the real (inflation-adjusted) return to value that stream of withdrawals.
- Your existing savings are grown at the pre-retirement return and subtracted.
- The monthly SIP needed to build the rest is worked out with the SIP formula.
Worked example
A 30-year-old spending ₹50,000 a month who wants to retire at 60: at 6% inflation, that becomes about ₹2.87 lakh a month by 60. Funding it until 85 at a 7% return needs a corpus of about ₹7.7 crore. ₹5 lakh saved today grows to about ₹1.14 crore at 11%, leaving about ₹6.6 crore to build — roughly ₹26,000 a month in a SIP.
Frequently asked questions
How much corpus do I need to retire?
Enough that, invested at a modest return, it can pay your inflation-adjusted expenses for every year of retirement. The calculator works this out from your current expenses, inflation and life expectancy.
What returns should I assume?
Before retirement, a mostly-equity portfolio might be assumed at 10–12%. After retirement most people shift to safer assets, so 7–8% is more realistic. Use conservative figures.
Does this include EPF, PPF and pensions?
Add the current value of all retirement savings in “savings already invested”. If you will receive a pension, reduce your monthly expenses by the pension amount.
